Hello, I’m Marcel Schmied, 23 years old, and I’m from Leipzig.

This fall, I completed my dual study program in computer science at the Cooperative State University of Saxony – in cooperation with Quality First Software GmbH (QFS), which is now part of mgm technology partners.

When I started my studies, QFS was still an independent company. During my very first practical phase, however, the team became part of mgm – which was exciting at first but not a problem at all. The team stayed the same, the environment remained familiar, and the working style just as family-like as before.

A Start with a Summer Party and Team Spirit

Even before my studies officially began, I had the chance to meet the team at the annual summer party – a two-day event with colleagues and their families. This open and welcoming atmosphere made getting started incredibly easy for me.

After that, the classic alternating model began: three months of theory at the university, followed by three months of practical work in the company. While I found the university phases rather dry – lots of lectures, little practical relevance – I looked forward to every single practical phase at QFS all the more.

From QF-Test to Web Development – Learning Through Practice

In my first practical phase, I got to know QF-Test. It enables automated testing of graphical user interfaces – and I was instantly fascinated and impressed by how simple yet powerful the tool is. Writing tests with it was genuinely fun!

In the following phases, I was able to explore many different areas:

Development of a Gradle plugin
Performance testing of Docker environments and VMs
Initial tasks in web development
And even active development on QF-Test itself, for example in the licensing process and improving dialogs.

My personal highlight was my bachelor’s thesis. I focused on continuous integration and deployment – specifically on what’s known as the Bouquet integration, a central component of QFS’s build pipeline. It allows feature branches to be merged dynamically, enabling long-term interaction testing – an exciting and practical approach that still fascinates me.

Small Company, Big Team Spirit

What made QFS special for me was the working atmosphere.

The team was open, helpful, and like a family from the very beginning. I could always ask questions, received honest feedback, and was involved in decision-making. Beyond work, there were many opportunities to get to know colleagues – whether at the Leipzig company run, the table tennis cup, or simply during lunch breaks, where we tried out a new restaurant every week (if one could be found).

Looking Back and Ahead

When I look back on my dual study program today, I’m very grateful for my time at QFS and mgm. I was able to gain insight into nearly all areas of software development, gather practical experience, and discover where my strengths lie.

Now I’m continuing with a master’s degree in data science – to further specialize.

I’m taking with me a wealth of experiences, exciting projects, and wonderful memories – and with that, a big thank you to all my colleagues who accompanied me on this journey.

With 48 teams and 449 participants from 20 mgm locations we successfully raised 21,000 € for World Bicycle Relief under the banner of #mgmfit4community. For 31 days, participants pushed their limits through sweating, biking, hiking, and running. Together, we have achieved something truly remarkable.

World Bicycle Relief is an international, non-profit organization that specializes in large-scale, comprehensive bicycle distribution programs to aid poverty relief in developing countries around the world. Their programs focus primarily on education, economic development, and health care.

QFS summer event in Landshut

Last weekend, the QFS team met in Landshut for an unforgettable company outing. It started with a relaxed get-together on Friday evening, followed by a visit to the city festival SPEKTAKEL. Especially the impressive magic show and many other artistic highlights created a great atmosphere.

The highlight of the weekend was the rousing drumming workshop on Saturday. Under the guidance of Sigi Lee, who inspired with Brazilian and African rhythms as well as his charming Bavarian manner. Despite the rain, the participants did not miss out on exploring Landshut. The evening was rounded off with gigantic pizzas in the city center and a cozy get-together.

On Sunday, an exciting tour of Trausnitz Castle was on the program – a perfect end to a successful weekend full of team spirit and good humor!

Our employees came together in Geretsried for several days to play, do sports, eat, sing and work together. In short, to have fun together. A personal photo review by the employees “What was best in 2023 – private and work?” brought back fond memories. Joint excursions, other celebrations and personal highlights etc. were brought back to mind.

The kick-off workshop “AI for QF-Test” together with Martin Backschat from our parent company mgm technology partners was more technical. mgm’s models can be trained with the extensive documentation on QF-Test (manual, support cases, etc.) to assist as a “QF-Test assistant” in support and developer projects.

January 17–19, 2023, Geretsried: Our staff came together for several days in Geretsried to play games, do sports (table tennis, table football, Codenames, Pilates yoga…), eat, sing and work together. In short, to have fun together.

A photo review of 2022 by Martina Schmid brought back fond memories, because there was a lot to celebrate in 2022: among other things, the belated anniversary celebration on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of QFS and, of course, the merger with mgm- technology Partners. Joint excursions, further celebrations, the welcoming of new employees and newborn children, the relocation of the office in Leipzig, etc. were all brought back to mind. Karlheinz Kellerer focused on financial topics. Plamen Vesselinov provided interesting statistics on support.

Claudia Sommer, a well-known singer, gave us a very entertaining presentation on the effects of our language – both how we can actively influence it, but also with regard to the different effects of one and the same text delivered by different people. We took away with us that we can indeed actively “manipulate” our supposedly natural way of speaking on the telephone or in lectures.

One year ago, on September 1, 2022, mgm technology partners and Quality First Software signed a cooperation agreement: a milestone in the history of QFS and the basis for a broad and trustful cooperation between our companies now and in the future. Since 2009, we have been facing technological challenges together but in a “wild marriage”, so to speak, and are now in the process of growing together even further and driving our projects forward together.

mgm itself celebrated something even bigger in its 16 locations worldwide: The threshold of 1000 employees has been exceeded since September 2023. CEO and founder Hamarz Mehmanesh: “I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved together through teamwork and the projects we’ve taken on. We started small nearly 30 years ago, and while our growth has been steady, the last 20 months have been truly remarkable. I’m genuinely thrilled.”

Who got married? Munich-based mgm technology partners GmbH (mgm) and QFS are now now embarking on a joint journey. As of September 1, 2022, QFS is a fully owned subsidiary of the mgm Group.

On August 25, 2022, in bright sunshine, the management of mgm came to meet the QFS teams from Leipzig and the Oberland in person at their office in Geretsried/Gelting – Hamarz Mehmanesh and Steffen Weber from mgm even traveled by bicycle!

“A new time begins at QFS” says Karlheinz Kellerer, and a new clock was installed in the office by the two QFS managing directors Gregor Schmid and Karlheinz Kellerer under the eyes of the mgm management. Hamarz Mehmanesh and Steffen Weber then gave a vivid tour of the world of mgm with many concrete examples from mgm’s everyday work and the cooperation between the international teams.

15.–17.07.2022, Bad Kötzting: To celebrate the company’s anniversary, our employees and their families met in July 2022 for a big summer party at the Adventure Camp in the Bavarian Forest.

There we filled a weekend with all kinds of sporting adventures such as the “Flying Fox”, river tubing, climbing, archery, canoe paddling, and more.

Finally, we were able to celebrate the anniversary with cake. Together we reminisced about what we had achieved and looked to the future relaxedly – not least thanks to self-made “Quali tea”.

Due to Corona, there had to be another online Christmas party this year, which does not mean that it would be less creative. The evening started with a riddle in Gathertown, which we solved with the help of Caesar’s cipher:

And with a short presentation of the QFS Success Staircase 2021 with nice experiences from the past year.

The main part this time was Secret Santa. Everyone was assigned a different colleague and was allowed to make a gift for a budget of 50 €. Sweet treats and drinks were given away, but also individual matching gifts as well as a card on which the giver should write what the recipient particularly appreciates.

After the official part, we could still play “Set”, “Who am I?” or “Monday Painter”, “Gartic Phone” and “Werewolf” in various private Gather Town rooms or enjoy one or the other cold or warm drink.

I am someone, who moved to the area to live closer to the mountains. So, you can imagine how surprisingly was it for me to find out that my colleagues, who like bouldering, running, hiking and spend the whole life near one of the two glaciers that left in Germany, have ever trod neither of the glaciers with own feed. We needed to change it as soon as possible!

The choice of a route was obvious: climbing Zugspitze via Höllentalklamm offers enjoying beautiful views, hiking a glacier, climbing a via ferrate and the highest mountain in Germany. How happy (and a bit surprised) was I, when the stars really aligned for this tour!

In fact, I had not done much alpinism before – that’s why I had some doubts at first about whether I should try the tour. Was it perhaps too difficult for a rookie like me, who had to borrow about half of his equipment from friends (including hiking pants)? The route looked relatively strenuous at first glance, but there was no more direct route up to the summit. So this was clear for me, then as little distance as possible.

The first section of about two hours to the hut was nothing more than a nice walk. The caves and waterfalls of the Höllentalklamm were a beautiful, albeit a quite wet sight. At the hut there was first of all another cold shower, a good dinner and a cozy, if somewhat narrow mattress camp…

I had been planning for more than 2 years to finally climb the Zugspitze and was thrilled when Sofya got down to business and initiated the project. I had a lot of respect for the tour – especially the route over the glacier. I would not have chosen that one for lack of experience.

But thanks to the superb organization including a lot of borrowed equipment the adventure stayed well within limits and could be mastered without greater difficulties – not least thanks to the absolutely perfect weather, which has made the tour a dream. Only the summit shock, which probably all Zugspitze hikers know, when you reach the summit after hours in the rock only to meet the throng of sneaker tourists, is a bit heavy. But I can’t really complain as I was grateful for a descent in comfort with the train.

Remote lunch together

2021-06-29: At QFS we normally go out for lunch together 3-4 times a month. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, working from home has become compulsory and these Tuesday lunch outings have been cancelled. Therefore, we had several remote lunch meetings, which were quite funny. Everyone picked up their food from a nearby restaurant or had it delivered, then we feasted and goofed off together from 12.00 – 13.00 o’clock, just like a normal lunch. For some of us, even in their own garden.

2020-12-08, everybody at home:Due to the Covid pandemic our christmas party was online which does not mean that is was less creative. Pascal and his family wrapped christmas presents for everyone with punch, cookies, a small pixie and the gingerbread house parts. The first task was being a creative builder for this tiny house. The houses were presented to all employees within the platform Gather town that was warmly decorated. After the official part we played “Set”, “Who am I” or “Pictionary”.

New office – (not only) new equipment

March 2020, Geretsried-Gelting: A lot is moving right now. We have bought plants for our new office to create a good interieur climate, additional office cabinets for more storage space and of course the new soccer table. Obvious things are happening but also less evident things like our thoughts about “Reinventing Organizations”. Mentioning this here seems to be a bit strange. However, the soccer table was bought by using the reinventing method of “consultation process”. It was the task of one colleague to buy it and asked the others for advice. One small first step but with a tangible effect of a new soccer table.

Relocation of our head office into a new office building

2020-01-15, Lenggries, Germany: This winter season we didn’t have a christmas party, but a New Year reception in the Alps. We met for coffee and cake in the Lahnerstubn. After that everybody could do in the afternoon whatever he/she liked to do: Walking to the Brauneck mountain, chatting, playing cards or working a bit ;). After a rich dinner, everyone presented his/her last year’s highlights and the organizsation the QFS budget was donated to. Martina Schmid had a little “glass of awesomeness”-present for every employee.

2019-08-02 until 2019-08-04: Leipzig, Germany: This relaxing weekend started with a picnic in the parc Clara Zetkin near our Leipzig office in Forststraße. We started our next day with a breakfast in the inclusion hotel Philippus near Karl-Heine-Straße and the Canal Karl-Heine. After this we had a city tour in a historic tram exclusively for us. The afternoon was also very active with beach volleyball at the Stadthafen Leipzig and a tour in two dragon boats. Of course, we had little races. We enjoyed the evening with good food in the Social Impact lab, a co working space at the Canal Karl-Heine. On Sunday we could decide between a visit of the Zoo of Leipzig or a bike tour around the Cospudener See.

2019-07-13, Wolfratshausen, Germany: The disctrict Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen arranged a vocational training fair “myfuture! Wolfratshausen” on the 13th of July. Our fair stand’s staff (Michael Höber and Martina Schmid) wasn’t as interesting as our football table, which was all time in use. Besides good IT skills kicker skills are also highly appreciated in our company :) Offers for a dual curriculum, internships and working student jobs were in demand as well as further information on our success in Great Place to Work.One of the visitors is already recuited :)

Christmas event at the Easter Lakes

2018-11-23, Lake Fohn, Germany: The forest house at Lake Fohn, is an insider tip for a great christmas event. After coffee and cake we made a walk around the lake and a part of it was a trust walk in teams of two people who walked blindly. Interesting how the other senses change when you don’t see anything. This pleasant day ended up standing around the camp fire.

2018-07-06, Gelting and Lake Starnberg: This year’s summer event was sporty. We started with an archery trial session in Gelting in a gymnasium. Everybody tried to strike home. The right technique wasn’t as easy as expected. After this we went to a gourmet hike at Lake Starnberg of about four kilometers between three restaurants at the eastern bank of the lake. First the weather was a bit rainy, but towards evening the sun came out. This was a enjoyable and well-organized event.

Great Place to Work at QFS: Workplace culture

2017-09-27, Wolfratshausen, Germany: This was a big day, the Great Place to Work (GPTW) Workshop. An experienced consultant of GPTW spent one day with us as company. The analysis of the antecedent employee survey concerning the corporate culture of QFS was presented and all employees were interviewed in small groups again about the culture of Quality First Software qualitatively. All positive aspects of cooperation and the small tweaks for an even better and more trustful collaboration were presented to the managing directors. These points will be optimized within the next weeks.

World of work at first hand 2017

2017-07-20, Geretsried – On Thursday morning five students from schools nearby of the classes that are near to their graduation participated in the project day “world of work at first hand”, QFS participated for the fourth time. The young people that are going to start working soon could choose out of 35 companies. In a very short period of time they learned to know QF-Test and tested the homepages of the three schools. They were equally talented in playing table football afterwards.

City cycling – The challenge cup goes to QFS

2017-06-19 until 2017-07-09, Geretsried, Germany: In the city cycling event 2017 QFS won lots of prizes – we really merit these prizes, since we rode our bikes for three weeks. The challenge cup is now presented in the meeting room for the most active bicycle team in Geretsried (almost 2,000 km and 280 kg CO2 were saved). Especially one of our colleagues from Leipzig cycled after our summer party from Geretsried back home to Leipzig in three days. The committee had good intuition: The winner’s old backback was not very comfortable and so his prize was a new trekking backpack.

2017-06-30 -2017-07-01, Valley, Germany: The 30th of June will stay positive in remembrance of lots of QFS employees and family members. When do you usually ride a camel – in Bavaria, sleep in an oriental tent between camels, lamas, alpacas, goats, horses and … boas? All this and even more happened on the 30th of June and in the following night at the camel farm. The lively and motely QFS team discovered the Mangfall valley by foot and on camels and was even influenced by the stoic calm of the animals. Back at the farm an Indian buffet was served in the oriental tent where also the snake show took place and some of us cured their aversion against boas by touching them. At the campfire the guitar was played and the small fell asleep and dreamed like the large afterwards in the oriental tent of The Arabian Nights.

Die expectations of the participants from the two locations Geretsried and Leipzig were multifaceted. Speeches to the actual topics were held for getting everyone to a uniform level of knowledge and for the completion of these topics project teams were created.

Visions became goals and an actual roadmap. Since the developers are testers and supporters “by the way”, in part also consultants, admins or managing directors, an organizational solution was found how these technical visions can be implemented successfully. Highly motivated and with new structures, we will surely achieve these goals.

A whole morning we exchanged views and experiences concerning economy worldwide and local as well as sociopolitical subjects. The Managing Directors Karlheinz Kellerer and Martina Schmid presented QF-test and the special company philosophy around the quality issue. We discovered an unexpected technical overlap in the former professional field of the mayor who had been responsible for the IT of the Bavarian State Lottery. Mrs Hilpert faces the lack of specialists which is lamented by both parties by promising initiatives like job speed dating… Of course we had to visit our most important “employee”, the soccer table.

2016-12-02 – 2016-12-03, Leipzig, Germany: Die christmas event of QFS took place in Leipzig this year. After the work was done, we were invited to a panorama view at night over the city. Afterwards we visited our Leipzig colleagues in their office – also to a kicker match “Munich against Leipzig” analogous to the Bundesligaspitzenspiel. We had Spanish specialties for Christmas dinner and the evening ended with darts and billiards.
The next morning we explored Leipzig-Plagwitz in an extensive feast day tour, before the Geretsried colleagues made the 6-hour return journey by train.

Our colleagues from Leipzig were on site, both as part of the audience and as “hosts” of two sessions. Although the technical focus during the event was on .NET, it was an enriching experience and offered an interesting perspective beyond our usual (Java and Web UI) scope. QF-Test for .NET and Windows is on the QFS Roadmap for 2018.

City Cycling – Cycling for a good climate – at QFS

Almost all colleagues are registrated and they are writing down their covered distance by bike online every evening during the next three weeks. With, Naviki, a route planner, the kilometers and with a conversion table the actual patrol and money savings because of riding the bike instead of taking the car are calculated. The overview of covered distance by person is motivating, some colleagues even become ambitious in this “competition”. Everybody who takes part in this event is not just protecting our climate and doing something for health but also can benefit from discounts in local restaurants and bicycle shops.

The QFS customers from different cultural areas were differentiated by “culture dimensions” that are relevant for business context. The goal was talking about the different behavior and communication patterns of the countries and defining possible interaction and action strategies. Dr. Sylvia Schroll-Machl discussed our concrete problems and illustrated her explainings with a large number of examples. The cultural mirror was held up to us and had some aha experiences, for example how we seem as “Germans”.
This intercultural day was very enriching for the whole team. QFS rounded off this exciting day full of ideas for further international cooperation with the summer event at the sunny Deininger Weiher.

QFS at the 10th company run in Geretsied

2016-06-08, Geretsried, Germany – Traditionally, some of the QFS employees and their family members took part in the 10th company run of the Business Forum Oberland. Who was not running on the track was supporting with loud cheers in the audience, as a photographer, cloths guarding, table squatters or beer- and pretzel bringer.

The colleagues from Leipzig were also actively involved, although the much more exciting company run in Leipzig with 12,000 participants took place at the same time.

The weather gods smiled on the runners – interrupted the continuous rain for an hour – but less well with the organizers – “drowned” party with music and celebrities afterwards.

After a short film about the stadium and its impressive tent roof the courageous QFS employees climbed on the roof of the Olympic Stadium. The sun was shining bright. All of us – well safeguarded – enjoyed the view over Munich and this special Olympic city tour. We brought this wonderful excursion day to a close in the beer garden that is at the foot of the Olympic Tower.

In memoriam Michael Bretthauer

2015-10-09 - We deeply mourn the loss of our long-term employee, colleague and friend Michael Bretthauer, who passed away on September 23, 2015.

His early death is deeply felt by us. Michael was committed to the company and greatly valued by us all. He was a central personality in our sales team and has successfully established this department.

We are thankful that we had the opportunity to get to know Michael, a life-loving and extremely creative person, who was full of ideas and contributed team spirit and cheerfulness during stressful times. We loved his sense of humor, expressed both in words and drawings, and the positive, constructive way with which he bore up with the ever tougher times in the last few years, and never complained. Michael will always be a part of QFS and have a lasting influence in our work.

Our thoughts are with all family and friends, and all those who were close to him.

2014-07-15, Geretsried, Germany -Against the lack of specialists: young talents at QFS Just before the summer holidays a group of 9th grade pupils visited QFS. With qualified questions and much interest they participated in the company presentation. In the practical part they even found a bug on the homepage of their school they had to test. A small table soccer tournament pupils against QFS completed the day.

Introduce young people early on into the professional world and show the range of qualified jobs available locally is the idea behind. The mandatory project day “world of work at first hand” was performed for the first time and at the initiative of the city Geretsried and industry community Geretsried.

2011-09-23 – 2011-09-24, Lenggries, Germany - QFS’ 10 years celebration, where extended staff and families were invited, took place including an overnight stay at an alpine hut at the Brauneck (Lenggries).

The weather was a perfect dream. Depending on fitness and age some took the cable car while others preferred to hike. At the alpine hut Florianshütte we were greeted with coffee, cake and a fantastic view. A cozy get-together with buffet, games and singing formed the evening program.

Breakfast next morning on the sunny terrace was the conclusion of a great event with the focus on spending time together, far away from business and daily routine.

Diverse development platforms – especially for Java (that can be used for the development on different platforms) – don’t face a large number of cross platform testing tools.

After a short overview of the common Java UI technologies (Web/HTML, AWT/Swing, SWT) will follow more about UI tests. A high saving potential – particularly by cross platform automation of tests – faces high requirements to the test tool.

Afterwards Swing and SWT will be analysed. Generally Java is offering the possibility to test in all depth of the application and to have a full control over it. However, Swing and SWT differ fundamentally.

Cross platform UI tests are already reality for Swing, concerning SWT there is still a lot of homework to do for tool developers. Regarding to web tests providers and users seem to have put up with an exclusive focus on Internet Explorer.

2004-03-18 – 2004-03-24, Hanover, Germany - Exhibitor and SUN-iForce Partner at the SUN stand. For the first time, Quality First Software GmbH was taking part in CeBIT 2004. The world’s largest IT trade-show with more than 6500 exhibitors was held in Hanover from March 18th through March 24th.

Even after a week in action, always friendly addressing unknown passers-by (“Do you speak Java?”) and continuously presenting qftestJUI, the enthusiasm of our team didn’t wane.

Drawn by our team or attracted by our qftestJUI flyer, many interested parties visited our stand, leading to more than 100 new business contacts and much valuable input. We also enjoyed the chance to meet some of our existing customers in person.

Besides the live-tests and demos, the discussions about Java, testing and quality assurance in general were extremely interesting. It is good to see the increase of importance that is ascribed to quality in software development.

A topic that came up very often was unit testing and its relation to qftestJUI. Of course, unit testing and functional UI testing ideally complement each other, approaching the topic from opposite sides. The combination of both techniques, using qftestJUI to drive the application as a whole and set up a realistic environment for complex unit tests can result in extremely powerful tests that go way beyond what is possible with either unit or UI tests alone. Thanks to the Jython interface, it is already possible to integrate unit tests into qftestJUI, but the topic is of such interest, that we will look into providing a much better integration.

Another topic of interest was SWT (the Standard Widget Toolkit from Eclipse) as an alternative to Swing. We’re going to review whether extending qftestJUI to support SWT tests appears feasible and desirable.
