Diverse development platforms – especially for Java (that can be used for the development on different platforms) – don’t face a large number of cross platform testing tools.
After a short overview of the common Java GUI technologies (Web/HTML, AWT/Swing, SWT) will follow more about GUI tests. A high saving potential – particularly by cross platform automation of tests – faces high requirements to the test tool.
Afterwards Swing and SWT will be analysed. Generally Java is offering the possibility to test in all depth of the application and to have a full control over it. However, Swing and SWT differ fundamentally.
Cross platform GUI tests are already reality for Swing, concerning SWT there is still a lot of homework to do for tool developers. Regarding to web tests providers and users seem to have put up with an exclusive focus on Internet Explorer.
